We read through more than 15 studies from all major giants in the social media marketing industry. Additionally, we also analyzed the top accounts on Instagram to establish a relationship between caption text and Instagram engagement.

Using Both Location Tag And Hashtags Drives The Most Engagement
Hashtags are a norm on Instagram.
When the Instagram accounts of the top 100 global brands were analyzed in 2014, it was found that 88 percent of the posts posted by brands contain at least one hashtag.
Additionally, it was also revealed that posts with one hashtag and location tag made way for 13 percent and 29 percent more engagement respectively.
If you want to make your posts shine on Instagram, make sure that your Instagram caption consists of appropriate location tags and hashtags. Another study conducted on 65,000 social media posts revealed that having nine hashtags in your Instagram caption will drive maximum engagement.
Captions Contain Fewer Hashtags When Brands Post Videos
A study revealed that brands tend to use fewer hashtags when they post videos, between 3 and 9 hashtags. For carousel posts and images, however, this is not the case.

Data revealed that the perfect Instagram post caption is short and precise. It is easy to read and provides the user with a quick summary of everything that you want to say.
Although most Instagram captions tend to have at least 10 words, it was found that the posts with less than 10 words and more than 20 emojis perform the best.

Captions With Less Than 10 Words Can Boost The Engagement Rate For Carousels By 3.13%

While most Instagram posts have between 10 and 30 words, the data shows that the shorter the caption is, the better it is!
It was found that captions with less than 10 words increase the average engagement rate per post to 2.35% for videos, 2.54% for images, and 3.13% for carousels. No, hashtags are not included in this.
Write short, crisp, witty, and precise. While lengthy captions might look attractive to you, stats suggest otherwise.
So, next time you post on Instagram, make sure that you keep it short!
Writing Questions In Your Caption Doesn’t Necessarily Engagement

Avoid asking questions in your caption unless you are sure that it will drive engagement for sure.
